Throughout the ages, many different interpretations have been extracted from these complex tapestries. Luxuriously woven in fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads, the tapestries vividly depict scenes associated with a hunt for the elusive, magical unicorn. Both animals are seen holding high the banner of Jean le Viste, the commissioner of this most famous set of medieval tapestries. Six individual tapestries make up the “Lady and the Unicorn” or “La Dame à la licorne” series. These wars in Italy increased contact between the French elites and Italian art, (though contact already existed through religious and commercial networks) and soon the shift began, from what we call the medieval period, to that we call the Renaissance. Historians argue that in five of the six panels, the mysterious lady with the unicorn is Mary Tudor. Unfortunately, the tapestries had not endured the passage of time well, and showed evidence of having been gnawed at by rats, and were going mouldy. With her is a unicorn – hence the name of the pieces – and a lion. Its rich collection of medieval art offers a rare peek into that mysterious age.
